China is located in East Asia and has a population of 1.3 billion people. The country is bordered to the north by Russia and Mongolia and to the south and west by a number of other Asian nations such as Vietnam, Laos and India. China is a bustling busy country in many locations, and small sleepy villages in others. The locals have a rich culture, colourful history and some excellent cuisine. The official language of China is Mandarin Chinese, with numerous local dialects. English is spoken in most tourist areas by guides and in hotels.

Best time to travel

The climate in China is very diverse with the northeast experiencing hot summers and very cold winters. The north and centre having heavy rainfall, with semi-tropical summers and cool winters in the southeast.

Visas are required for entry into China by those from the USA, Canada, UK, EU and Australia. The length of these visas and the conditions surrounding them vary by country of origin.

Getting there

Most parts of the world have flights directly into China. Although home to a number of international airports, Beijing and Shanghai are usually the central entry point for tourists.
