Best time to travel

Ethiopia experiences heavy rains between June and early October. The rest of they year has very mild temperatures. The lowland areas in the west, east, and south are the only areas that top 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit). The highland areas average close to 20 degrees Celsius (68 Fahrenheit).

Money and costs

The official currency of Ethiopia is the Birr. The exchange rate is around US$1=Birr8.8. US currency is the most popular currency to carry and can easily be exchanged in most cities. There are no ATMs that accept foreign credit cards and only a small amount of businesses accept them with a large commission. The Euro is also gaining popularity in Ethiopia.


Ethiopian visas can be obtained on a monthly basis at airports for US$20. Obtaining a visa at Ethiopian embassies will be more costly.

Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa is the only international airport in Ethiopia.
