General surgery

General surgery abroad can help a patient to identify specialist treatment centres overseas. General surgeons, contrary to their name, tend to focus on surgery of the abdominal organs, including the intestines, oesophagus, stomach, gallbladder, colon, liver, pancreas, bile ducts and small bowel. General surgeons commonly deal with bleeding, infections, organ perforations and bowel obstructions. General surgery can even include operations on the skin, such as treating burns, tumours and moles.

Also serving in trauma, general surgeons are often the first port-of-call for surgical emergencies and must be ready to treat any situation, frequently burns and bleeding.

Common general surgery procedures

General surgeons regularly treat hernias and remove the gallbladder and appendix. They also frequently perform non-cosmetic breast surgeries, usually to diagnose, evaluate or treat cancer. They treat complications from diverticulitis and, depending on the ability of a head and/or neck doctor, might operate on the thyroid gland. A common technique is laparoscopic surgery, which utilises tiny cameras and instruments.
