Finances and insurance

Medical tourismIt's your money...

Know your finances

You should investigate any payment plan options available, understand any initial deposits that need to be paid, and ask about the payment options available to you (i.e. cash, credit card, cheque). Weigh up all your options and pick one that suits you.

Make sure you get a detailed payment plan from your provider so you know exactly what is and isn't included. Be clear on cancellation fees, and the refund policy in the possibility of not being able to have all the medical treatment you planned. You should also enquire about a fixed-price currency rate to avoid fluctuating exchange rates.

Help covering the cost?

Some USA employers are discovering medical tourism. Some insurance policies may fully or partially cover you for certain treatments overseas. Elective procedures are often not covered, even in your home country. Call your insurers to find out more.

In some circumstances UK patients can receive NHS-funded treatment in another European country. Contact your local healthcare trust to see if you qualify.

Travel insurance

Due to the increasing popularity of medical tourism, some health insurers are beginning to offer travel insurance options for medical tourists.

Can you get tax back?

You may be able to claim tax relief for certain treatments overseas. Check with your local tax office for more information.
