Northern Australia pushes to claim its stake as a medical tourism destination

The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) is pushing for Australia to become a leading medical tourism destination and will hold a conference in Cairns, in far north Queensland, tomorrow to discuss the issue.

Mr Hingerty says medical tourism is one of the fastest growing niche tourism markets in the world and could help save the country's flailing tourism industry.

"People travel to Australia and Cairns because of the reasons that we Australians often overlook, we have clean air, clean water, people come here to bask in some of that purity and we just want to extend that by saying, 'well why you're here enjoying some of that purity then you can also have a medical check up or a medical service if you so wish'," he said.
