Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is an island located in South Asia, just off the coast of India, and has a population of 20.9 million people. The national capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, but the largest city is Colombo. This country is rich in culture with influences from the Indians, Dutch, Portuguese and the British, leading to a rainbow of colour and atmosphere. Its fun and friendly people are coupled with the natural beauty of its island coastline and dense green forestry. Sri Lanka has a growing reputation as a quality Medical Tourism provider. The most common languages spoken in Sri Lanka are Sinhala, Tamil and English.

Medical tourism

While offering procedures in a number of different areas, the Sri Lankan Medical Tourism industry has an emphasis on healing with a high number of Medical Spas and Alternative Treatment facilities. There are also a number of service providers who specialise in the always-popular Cosmetics, Dental and Eye procedures, as well as Infertility and Orthopedics. See the box to the right to view a full list of available treatment areas.

Best time to travel

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with distinct dry and wet seasons, but there are in fact two wet seasons with monsoons occurring in both May to July (in the southwest of the island) and December to January (in the north and east). The busiest time for foreign tourists in Sri Lanka is from December through to March, and the Christmas/New Year period. It can be hard to find accommodation on the island during these times so make sure to book in advance. Escaping the crowd is not the only advantage to booking out-of-season, as a lot of prices in the tourist areas are also known to drop right down during this time.

The only international airport to operate in Sri Lanka is the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, 30km north of Colombo.
